Dodging The Slop?
I recently caught up with a friend I had not spoken to in a while, and I missed our conversations. But when we hung up, I felt disappointed, and it took me a moment to understand why. Every few minutes, no matter what we were discussing, she would say, "Let me look it up on ChatGPT." I wanted to hear her thoughts, trade memories, share experiences, and figure things out together. By the end of the call, I felt exhausted. We had spent time talking, but I missed the personal connection I'd hoped for.
I see a similar challenge in businesses.
As the founder of YoWAD Tech, I believe your personality is part of what customers buy. The neighborhood coffee shop. The family bakery. The IT team that makes time to explain a problem. People remember how you make them feel.
That's why I taught my sons to use AI as a tutor for schoolwork: I told them to start with their own thoughts, explain what they want to communicate, and ask AI to quiz them with questions that deepen their thinking and help them express their ideas clearly.
Entrepreneurs can use the same approach. Before asking AI to write, give it something only you can provide, like your experience.
Ask yourself:
What problem did I solve for a customer this week?
What mistake taught me to run my business differently?
What do customers misunderstand about what I do?
Make sure it sounds like something you would say to a customer.
I'm excited about what AI can do, but when customers feel it has replaced your personal attention, they may lose the connection and trust that keep them loyal.
I find myself disinterested in a read, whether it is a short piece or a post, if it seems AI-generated.
I am not saying to avoid AI. It's an awesome, powerful tool that lets small business owners whip up email, social posts, and ad campaigns in a fraction of the time and cost it once took.
One simple way to build your AI tutor is to have AI interview you before it writes. Instead of asking for a draft immediately, tell it to ask you questions first:
Your answers become the raw material, rooted in personal experience and judgment that AI can't create. The same applies to style. Telling AI to "sound conversational" gives an algorithm almost nothing. Grounding AI in your actual words creates a permanent filter for your voice.
Once you have a draft using original information, do not ask the AI if it is good; it will always say yes. Review your draft for generic wording, unsupported claims, and overpromises through the eyes of a skeptical customer.
Finally, one rule remains, no matter what AI helps create. Before anything important goes out, have someone who truly knows your business give it a final read. AI can write, but it will never know you or your business as well as you do.
